Shown below are the DNA branches for descendants from an unknown but mutual recent common ancestor (MRCA). There are at least 2 and possibly 3 lines to this MRCA suggested by paper documentation. Group 12a lineages are proven to William Hill (1700 VA - 1787 NC) who married Susannah Smither. Group 12b leads to to John Hill (bef 1710 - c1780) of Amelia County who was the brother of the William Hill in Group 12a. Finally, the Group 12c lineages are proven to William Hill (c1742 – c1787) of Amherst. There is documentation suggesting that the William Hill of Group 12c is a grandson of John Hill of Amelia County. However, this linkage has not yet been proven.

William Hill was born in Middlesex Co., Va., migrated first to Caroline Co., VA. and then to Surrey, NC.  He married Susanna SMITHER c/1736 in Caroline Co., VA. and had 10 sons: 1 - Jesse Hill (c1756 VA - 1820 SC), 2 - Dan Hill (1756 VA - 1826 TN) , 3 - Joshua Hill (c/1763 VA - ), 4 - Rev. Group 12b: John Hill (bef. 1710? - c1780) of Amelia County, brother of
William Hill (c1700 VA-c1786 NC) m/Susannah Smither

John Hill of Amelia County was the brother of William Hill who married Susannah Smither.  He married Elizabeth (possibly Wingo).  His children were William Hill, Sr, John Hill, Isaac Hill (VA – bef 1785), Moses Hill, Joel Hill (c1734 VA – 1834 KY) and daughter Priscilla Hill who married John Bell. Joel Hill migrated “far away” from Amelia Co. VA. William Hill, Sr preceded his father in death. His son, William Hill, Jr is thought to be the father of Abner Hill (c1768 VA - aft. 1850 KY).  Abner migrated to Kentucky with one of his uncles, either Joel or John Hill.  John Hill, Jr. first moved to Madison Co., Ky, buying land from Samuel Davis in 1787 and then moved to Clark County where he died in 1808. There is mounting evidence that William Hill, Jr (grandson of John Hill of Amelia County) is also the William Hill identified in Group 12c.  DNA evidence strongly suggests this possibility and researchers in both groups are actively studing it.

This lineage is documented to Isaac Hill (c1780 VA - c 1846 KY).  There is some evidence suggesting that this Isaac Hill is Isaac Hill, Jr and a grandson of John Hill of Amelia County.  Other evidence suggests that Isaac's father may be Gilead Hill or a variant of that name with an estimated birth date of 1750.

Group 12c: William Hill (bef 1742 – bef 1785)

William Hill, revolutionary soldier from Amherst County, Va. was born before 1742 and died about 1785. He married Susannah (?) and had three children: Judith Hill Lyons, Elizabeth Hill Thurmond, and Madison Hill. The only known son* of this William Hill was Madison Hill (1773 VA – 1859 VA) who married Polly Day (c1775 – 1855 VA) on 14 August 1790. The male children of Madison Hill were: 1 - Edward D. Hill (1790 – aft. 1870) who married Jemima Pendleton; 2 - Daniel Yancy Gordon Hill (1797 – aft. 1860) who married Lucy Harris; 3 - Solomon Hill (1804 – 1893) who married Mary Polly Hill. Descendants from all 3 lines submitted DNA for analysis.

*There is mounting evidence that William Hill is the same William Hill, Jr that was a grandson of John Hill of Amelia County as shown in Group 12b. DNA evidence strongly suggests this possibility and researchers in both groups are actively studying it.
